State Lawmakers are opening the door of debate to Utah’s rental laws. They are looking, specifically, at single family homes with attached rental units, called “accessory apartments.”

The standards in Utah currently allow three unrelated individuals to reside in one home and classifying that as a family. Current regulations also allows three additional unrelated people, plus one, to live in an attached unit.

Yet there is growing concern that confusing regulations are leading to problems that affect the tranquility of a neighborhood.

The Utah League of Cities and Towns’ contributing reporter Susan Wood, takes a closer look at what’s going on inside rental property regulations.
